LISTENING FUTURES

The Listening Academy – study program Berlin
May – July 2026

From June 15 to 19, 2026, Khamoosh took part in the "On sonic heritage" session of Listening Futures, an extended study program by The Listening Academy held in Berlin, in partnership with Khamoosh alongside Culture Sound Zone & Listen Research Group, Malmö University, and MOCA NGO. Hosted at Errant Sound, the week opened with an introduction on sonic heritage with Maryam Fazeli, Golnoosh Heshmati, and Brandon LaBelle, collecting perspectives and terms: what constitutes heritage and its effects, and in what ways heritage work supports forms of knowledge, identity, and community building while raising critical issues of representation and recognition. This was followed by a presentation by Maryam Fazeli and Golnoosh Heshmati on the work of Khamoosh, sharing its issues and practices, reflecting on the potentiality of collective listening, and mapping prompts and research directions for the coming days.

The days that followed turned to collective discussion, readings, and reflections on the concept of sonic heritage — questions of the archive, the politics of representation, and embodied knowledge — and to a workshop on Marām-Nāmeh with pantea and Golnoosh Heshmati, approaching Marām-Nāmeh as a living document in flux, a collective possibility for thinking otherwise about togetherness and the forms of relation through which sonic heritage is shaped and understood, gathering around different languages, experiences, and ways of listening through listening, writing, and walking.

A further workshop, Land as sonic heritage with Maryam Fazeli, drew on her research into land practices in East Kurdistan, exploring the role of sound in maintaining and restoring land-based knowledge and indigenous cosmologies in the wake of extractivism and assimilation.

The closing days were given to sharing individual works and research, opening space for discussion and feedback on current activities and for elaborating approaches to sonic heritage as an act of attending to the stories and cultures of others. Breaking into working groups, we considered how to approach sonic heritage, its conservation and audibility, and worked on mapping out a possible heritage practice or project, before sharing results with pantea, Golnoosh Heshmati, and Brandon LaBelle in the final discussions and summing up, looking toward future activities.

The entire five-day session was also live-streamed using a streambox made by Soundcamp, connecting Khamoosh members who were not present, to the group discussions and sound walks in Berlin.
